Event Details
If Cole Porter and Irving Berlin were the greatest of the American composer/lyricists of the first half of the 20th century, it is undoubtedly true that Stephen Sondheim (1930-2021) fills that description for the second half. After establishing his credentials as a lyricist in his first two shows (“West Side Story” and “Gypsy”), Sondheim embarked on a solo career working without a collaborator and creating such memorable Broadway productions as “Company,” “Sweeney Todd,” “A Little Night Music,” “Sunday in the Park with George,” and “Into the Woods.” His numerous awards and nominations include eight Tony Awards (including a Lifetime Achievement Tony in 2008), an Academy Award, eight Grammy Awards, a Olivier Award, a Pulitzer Prize, a Kennedy Center Honor, and a Presidential Medal of Freedom.During this program we will have an opportunity to experience many of Sondheim’s most memorable show tunes performed by artists such as Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone, and Audra McDonald.
