Program Description

Event Details

The Thanksgiving Picture or Freedom of Want is one of Norman Rockwell’s most famous and recognizable works. Painted in response to Franklin D. Roosevelt’s State of the Union Address delivered on January 6, 1941, it appeared in the March 6, 1943 issue of the Saturday Evening Post. While it has become an ideal representation of the American family on Thanksgiving Day, many are unaware that it is the third of the Four Freedoms series created by the artist to illustrate the tenets of American democracy. Learn more about the evolution of Rockwell’s illustrations and the complicated legacy his works evoke.
