As America moved into the 20th century, Major League Baseball was evolving. There were two leagues and it occurred to the game's proprietors that it would be a good idea to match the champions in a post-season showdown. That was the birth of the first World Series, one that matched Boston and Pittsburgh, and barely resembled the classic we know today. The idea nearly blew up in baseball's face when a Hall of Fame manager refused to continue it. Award-winning sportswriter Hal Bock brings this drama to the Sachem Library in his October program -- Baseball's First World Series.
