Event Details
Early in his baseball career, Casey Stengel came to bat. As he stepped into the batter's box, he lifted his cap. When he did, a small bird flew out. It was one of the first tipoffs that Stengel would become one of baseball's most unforgettable characters. An average player, Stengel bounced around as a manager in Boston and Brooklyn before the New York Yankees hired him in 1949, touching off one of baseball's greatest runs. He managed the Yankees to five straight World Series championships and 10 American League titles in 12 seasons. Award-winning sportswriter Hal Bock reviews the Hall of Fame career of one of baseball's greatest ambassadors.
